Maindee is an incredibly unique and diverse area of Newport with a hard-working community that strives to unlock the area’s full potential. Below are 5 projects and initiatives that help Maindee flourish.
1. Full Colour Maindee is a street art initiative that spans Chepstow Road, featuring the amazing work of 50 artists and many volunteers. You can see many of the large murals above shops on the street. A full map showing the location of all the artwork can be found at themaindee.org website.

2. Llyfrgell Maindee Library was saved from closing by local residents in 2014. Maindee Unlimited was formed and the group now run the library as a community hub. As well as library books, you can access a whole host of events and services. Maindee Unlimited also looks after the Triangle across the road; a bright yellow building and community space. There are many plans for the Triangle that would benefit the community, including a play area for children currently being built!
3. Big Bocs Bwyd and The Maindee Pantry are both projects that help local people and tackle food waste. Maindee Pantry is open at Llyfrgell Maindee Library three days a week. Big Bocs Bwyd is a pay-what-you-can shop based at Maindee Primary School. Together they save over 2 tonnes of food per month.
4. Greening Maindee is an organisation dedicated to cultivating greener spaces in Maindee, and transforming neglected areas from dull grey places into pocket parks and community allotments. Make sure you check out the Mainbee Green Safari which explores Maindee’s community green spaces and download the Seek app by iNaturalist to identify the various plants you will find on your journey.

5. You can’t talk about good things in Maindee without mentioning the Maindee Festival. It’s an annual celebration that brings together music, performance, creativity, and community spirit to promote the diversity of people who live and work in Maindee. The event is usually held in July.
